From Arizona to Lake Murray: The Journey Ahead
October 4, 2026
Earning a spot in the Bassmaster Kayak Series Championship is an accomplishment. Making the journey to compete in it is an entirely different commitment.
For Paul Travis and Andrew Martin, the 2026 season has earned them the opportunity to represent AZ Kayak Bass Nation and Arizona on one of the biggest stages in competitive kayak bass fishing. Their paths to the Championship were different, but both required commitment, preparation, and performance throughout the season. Paul earned his opportunity by winning the 2026 AZ Kayak Bass Nation State Championship at Roosevelt Lake, turning a challenging regular season into a Championship victory when it mattered most. Andrew earned his opportunity through consistency, putting together a season that ultimately earned him the AZ Kayak Bass Nation Angler of the Year title. Two different paths have now brought them to the same destination: the 2026 Bassmaster Kayak Series Championship at Lake Murray in South Carolina.
An Opportunity Bigger Than One Tournament
For tournament anglers, opportunities like this are what countless hours on the water can eventually lead to.Every tournament entered, every practice day, every early morning launch, every disappointing finish, every successful decision, and every lesson learned along the way becomes part of the process.
The Championship is a reward for that work, but it is also the beginning of another challenge.
Paul and Andrew will have the opportunity to leave the waters they know in Arizona and compete against qualified kayak anglers from across the country on a completely different fishery.
There are no guarantees about what happens once they get there.
That is part of what makes earning the opportunity so meaningful.
They earned the chance to find out.
The Journey From Arizona to South Carolina
For an Arizona angler, competing at Lake Murray isn't as simple as signing up for another tournament. It requires a major commitment of time, travel, preparation, and money before a single tournament fish is ever submitted.
Thousands of miles separate Arizona from South Carolina.
Kayak tournament fishing also means bringing far more than a few rods and a tackle bag. Kayaks, motors, batteries, electronics, fishing equipment, safety gear, tools, spare equipment, and everything necessary to keep a tournament rig functioning have to make the journey as well.
Then comes one of the biggest investments of all:
Time.
Traveling across the country takes days. Practice takes days. The Championship itself takes days. Equipment has to be prepared before leaving and maintained throughout the trip.
That means time away from work, family, and everyday responsibilities.
For Paul and Andrew, the commitment to this Championship doesn't begin when lines go in at Lake Murray.
It begins when they start preparing to leave Arizona.
Learning a New Fishery
Once they arrive in South Carolina, another part of the journey begins. They have to learn Lake Murray.
The 2026 Bassmaster Kayak Series Championship is scheduled for October 15–17, creating three days of Championship competition on a fishery far removed from the desert reservoirs they regularly compete on in Arizona.
Practice will become extremely important.
Where are the fish positioned? What areas of the lake fit their strengths? What patterns can survive multiple tournament days? How much water should they try to cover? When should they stay with an area, and when is it time to move?
Those decisions are part of tournament fishing anywhere.
Making them on unfamiliar water against a field of Championship qualifiers raises the stakes.
The goal during practice won't necessarily be to catch every fish they find. It will be to learn enough about Lake Murray to make the right decisions when the tournament begins.
When competition starts, preparation gives way to execution.
Representing Arizona
There is another element to this trip that goes beyond individual competition.
Paul and Andrew will be representing AZ Kayak Bass Nation and the Arizona kayak fishing community on a national stage.
That matters.
One of the goals of AZ Kayak Bass Nation is to create opportunities for Arizona anglers to continue progressing through competitive kayak fishing.
An angler can enter a local tournament looking to experience competition for the first time. From there, they can develop their skills, compete for event wins, chase Angler of the Year, contend for a State Championship, and ultimately earn an opportunity to compete at the national level.
Paul and Andrew are examples of where that path can lead.
Their Championship qualifications give other Arizona anglers something tangible to chase and demonstrate the opportunities that can come from competing within the Arizona kayak bass fishing community.
The Opportunity Ahead
Qualifying for the Bassmaster Kayak Series Championship is something worth celebrating, but the opportunity in front of Paul and Andrew is even bigger than simply being able to say they qualified. They now get the chance to take everything they have learned competing in Arizona and put it to the test on a national stage.
The road ahead will demand a lot from both anglers. There are thousands of miles to travel, days of preparation and practice, unfamiliar water to learn, and time away from their families, work, and everyday lives.
All of that comes before the first official cast is ever made.
That commitment is part of what makes this opportunity special.
When Paul and Andrew launch onto Lake Murray, they will have earned their place alongside anglers from across the country who have made similar sacrifices to get there. From that point forward, it comes down to preparation, decision-making, execution, and making the most of the opportunities the lake gives them.
For AZ Kayak Bass Nation, this is also what we want our tournament series to help create.
We want Arizona anglers to have a place where they can compete, improve, chase championships, and earn opportunities that can take them beyond our local waters. Seeing two of our anglers preparing to make the trip across the country is a reminder of what is possible.
Paul Travis and Andrew Martin earned this opportunity.
Now they get to experience everything that comes with it—the preparation, the travel, the challenge, and ultimately the chance to represent AZ Kayak Bass Nation and the state of Arizona at the Bassmaster Kayak Series Championship.
We are proud to have them representing Arizona, and we can't wait to see where this journey takes them.
